International School of London in Qatar (ISLQ)

The School opened in August 2009 in a new school building provided by the Government in Duhail, on the northern edge of the city of Doha. The School is authorised to offer the Diploma Programme (IBD).

The ISL Schools have long been pioneers in the teaching of home language literacy. From the age of four, ISL Qatar students have six class periods per week of mother tongue language and literacy. Additionally, students whose first language is not English, are supported by English as an Additional Language (EAL) as necessary. These integrated language programmes are important not only to support a child's cultural connections, but because research shows it is the most effective way to teach languages and that it has positive benefits for overall academic performance.

ISLQ is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World school. The school has candidate status to implement the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) and is authorised to offer the Diploma Programme (IBD). These programmes are designed to fulfil the School's vision of combining intellectual rigour and high academic standards with a strong emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship.

The IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) offers a rigorous and challenging framework of academic study and life-skills appropriate for 11 to 16 year olds. It is designed to serve the particular needs of adolescents in an international framework. Emphasis is placed on developing critical and creative thinking skills, which are going to be highly valued in the future.

Although the language of instruction is English, home language literacy is supported from an early age. Beginning with the four-year-olds, five class periods of home language lessons are provided each week within the class day. Current home languages include: Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Norwegian and Spanish. As necessary, English as an Additional Language is also provided. Students whose first language is English begin French as an additional language study or extra English depending on their current level.

Environmental awareness will be promoted throughout the school. Students will learn about the major world environmental issues and will be encouraged to be responsible citizens and caretakers of our limited natural resources. Similarly, health and social education topics are integrated across the curriculum. All students participate in community service programmes to encourage them to develop a sense of social justice, service and compassion.
