Her name is Sara…. At first, Sara seems like any other teenage girl in Qatar—she loves her Blackberry, can describe the latest “it bag” and is looking forward to going college but if you ask her about education get ready for an in-depth answer worth of a UN ambassador. This should not come as a surprise considering that Sara is a member of the Qatar Academy debate team and the Model UN, she is always ready to speak on the importance of education and it’s role in alleviating poverty around the world....

There is a new phenomenon in film-making being explored here in Qatar and setting this new trend is Franck Merenda, Producer, Qatarsis, the film-making arm of DTM.
Imagine if you were able to vote for your favourite actor in a film? Seems impossible to most, since films are finished products for most of us. Not anymore since Qatarsis is reversing the trend here. And the vehicle that has made it possible is social media (like blog, Facebook and Twitter groups). Though global film-making points to involvement of social media when i....

Social Change is happening all around us. It can occur slowly and steadily, maintaining the stability of a social system. Or it can occur spontaneously and violently, damaging the original social system in the process.
In recent years, the Women Leaders Program of the World Economic Forum has been focused on supporting the advancement of women to positions of leadership in society, and on promoting consideration of other issues affecting women’s lives thus leading to a social change. For the past four years, the Foru....

Since the time I grew up in India’s capital and metropolitan city of New Delhi, I have been watching women undergoing their eternal chase towards modernity. When I moved to the Gulf about five years back, things were no different; only faces were! And now this contest has given me an opportunity to delve into this subject and give it some ‘thoughtful’ thinking. Qatar is a growing nation, taking giant strides towards modernization in every sphere of its developmental course. Such a growing modern society is a huge glo....

Growing up in a country that has embraced ongoing cultural reformation inevitably altered my cultural perspective; my views diverged from those of my elders. Today, a woman’s education, career, experience, and freedom of choice are the highlights of this nation. Young women like me feel empowered to accomplish our dreams. However, this certainly was not the case in Palestine 64 years ....

By all accounts, the region’s biggest real estate convention – Cityscape – held in Dubai a few weeks ago was a depressing reminder of the global recession. A shadow of its former self, the convention rented far less space and showcased far fewer eye-popping architectural wonders. The projects on display have either been completed or shelved indefinitely. It’s little wonder that a real estate-fueled financial crisis would abruptly halt Dubai’s speculative exuberance. But the news is....

Over the last 30 years, the state of Qatar has witnessed major socio-economic developments leading to significant changes in standards of living and life style. The change into a more affluent society has led to many unhealthy dietary habits. These have contributed to the magnitude of diseases among women in Qatar. Among these are obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases.
Obesity, a condition in which excess fats accumulate in fat tissues in the body, has increased dramatically in Qatar, especially among females, over t....
