For an unmarried person living in Qatar, there are many opportunities for entertainment and adventure depending on individual preference. Within Qatar you will find a number of single expatriates who have relocated from around the world, so meeting interesting people is relatively easy to do. Each nationality brings its own customs and heritage to Qatar so Doha can be a convenient place to learn about other cultures and traditions one might not have previously experienced. The eclectic mixture of languages, culture and traditions, is stimulating to people who have global interests. The key is to ask established colleagues and friends for recommendations which can often be an entrée into a group or activity. Reading the local paper or websites are also a way to stay informed on events happening around town and to be appraised of newly established ventures or social opportunities.
There are various gathering points for socializing or networking throughout the city. Some examples include informal bars such as Garvey’s, Aussie Legends bar in Rydges hotel, or the Rugby Club, which also feature live entertainment and sporting events at certain times of the year. For the more upscale minded there is the Irish Harp, an Irish theme pub in the Sheraton, the piano bar in La Cigale hotel, or the cigar bar, Habanos in the Ritz Carlton.
A number of activities are open to the expatriate community and appeal to a variety of interests including auditioning for a Doha Players production, or trivia nights at the Ramada hotel, bowling at Qatar Bowling Federation lanes, monthly book clubs, or equestrian sports.
Interest groups such as Qatar National History or the weekly ‘hash’ runners, who sponsor running in the desert, organize outings out and about in the city and even out to historic sites.
