The supreme Education Council (SEC) oversees and develops the education policy in Qatar. It monitors the progress of education reform efforts, and governs the Education and Evaluation Institutes. The Supreme Education Council also approves the contracts for the independent schools. Within the education reform are government-funded groups as well as private schools which are non-profit organizations sponsored by their individual embassy.
Comprehensive primary, secondary and higher education is available to Qatari and expatriate children. Generally there are a large number of schools with a range of curriculums, to suit many nationalities. Many expatriate communities in Qatar have opened schools that teach their particular national syllabus. Major English-language schools include: Qatar Academy, Doha College, the Choeifat School, and the American School at Doha (ASD).
In Qatar teaching and education is of a high standard from pre-school to university. For the better schools there is normally a waiting list, so it is advisable that you select several alternatives. Children will come and go throughout the year, so this will increase your chances of securing a place. If a position becomes available you will be notified immediately, as schools will accept children during the school terms.
