Clubs and Organizations « Living in Qatar «  Explore Qatar

    There are many people in Qatar who have formed clubs and organisations, some also tailored towards various nationalities.  Joining a club or an organisation can be an interesting and enjoyable way to past the time and meet new people, and is also a great opportunity for you to learn new skills or enjoy hobbies.  There are now many in Qatar which offer a variety of activities in which you can participate and cultural organisations hold various cultural functions throughout the year.  Normally there is a minimal membership fee.

    Here we have provided just a few of the local clubs and organizations, including contact information.

    Al Khor Toastmasters

    Al Khor Toastmasters meet at 6:45pm, every second and fourth Monday.  Semi-annual membership is QR 125 (singles) or QR 200 (couples), from October to April with QR 100 for guests.  Enjoy humorous dinner debates and explore the website to hone your public speaking skills.

    The only all women’s toastmasters club in Qatar.  It is open to all women above 18.  They meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Al Qarar Centre in Al Waab.

    American Women’s Association

    Founded in 1979, the American Women’s Association is a vibrant and active women’s group for all nationalities.  They provide a wide variety of activities and events, and also have some volunteer programs, a book club and hold a charity bazaar every year.

    AUZIQ

    This is a social group for Australians and New Zealanders.  Generally, they host four functions annually including the Australian and New Zealand Ball early in the year.  A coffee morning for new residents to Qatar is held monthly.  See the website for more details.  Information regarding functions is emailed to registered members.

    Bridge Club

    Bridge is played at Garveys on Wednesday mornings.  All women are welcome and if they have a bridge partner so much the better.  It starts at 8:30am and finishes around noon.

    Canadian Warden System

    The Canadian Embassy in Kuwait is responsible for the Canadians living and working in Qatar.  However, without a permanent presence in Qatar the embassy relies heavily on the warden system;  a network of volunteers to act as intermediaries that maintain communications between the Canadian Embassy in Kuwait and the Canadian Community in Qatar.

    The French Cultural Centre of Doha helps promote the diffusion of the francophone culture and the French language.  It also has a multimedia library with resources about France and a large range of books and DVD’s in French.

    Cub Scouts

    The Cub Scout Pack 3947 is part of the Boys Scouts of America.  All boys between the ages of 7 and 11 years are welcome to join.  The registration fee for the year is QR 300.  They meet at the Al Anood Clubhouse at Al Jazi Compound
     
    Doha Darts League

    The Doha Darts League takes place at various locations.  Matches are held weekly and are open to teams as well as singles.  They also hold an Annual Ball.
     
    Doha Garden Club

    Meetings are held every month.  They share information on gardening in this climate, plants that grow well in Qatar, where to buy them, etc.  Their annual membership fee is QR 100.  They also have an annual garden tour of selected gardens in the area around March, the proceeds of which are donated to a local charity.

    Doha Hash Harriers

    Doha Hash House Harriers meet weekly for less serious and family orientated runs.  Emphasis is on social interaction and fun.  The run locations are all close to Doha and easily accessible.  A social après is customarily held after each run.  It’s an opportunity to meet new people and all are welcome.

    Doha Hockey Club

    Doha Hockey Club was founded in 2007 by a group of hockey enthusiasts.  They meet twice a week to play social field hockey.  It is open to all ages.

    Doha Home Educators

    Doha Singers

    The Doha Singers is a long established community choir that gives concerts at Christmas and in late spring.  They meet in the American School of Doha music room on Monday nights.

    Doha Sub Aqua Club
    DSAC has over a hundred actively diving members and meet every Tuesday evening to talk and arrange the weekend’s dive (weather permitting) and generally socialize.

    Doha Toastmasters

    The first toastmasters club in Qatar, they have fortnightly meetings for improving communication and leadership skills.  Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of all months at the Gulf Paradise Hotel, and  are open to members and guests (free of cost) who are interested in improving their soft skills.  They also conduct short term programs like youth leadership programs for adolescents in the age group of 12 to 18 and speech craft program for adults.

    Filmcom Toastmasters International

    A truly multinational Toastmasters Club that fosters effective Communication and Leadership skills.  With members from eleven different countries, meetings are held twice a month at the Qatar Aeronautical College.  Guests and visitors are welcome to attend meetings.

    Malaysian Association of Qatar
    The Malaysian Association of Qatar (MAQ), was formed on 14 April 2000 on the recommendation by YB Dato’ Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, the then Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, who was on official visit to Qatar.MAQ is officially recognized by the Government of Malaysia as the Association representing Malaysians in Qatar and patronized by the Ambassador Malaysia to the State of Qatar.

    Qatar Badminton Club

    Qatar Golf Lovers

    QGL was formed to promote golf among the residents of Qatar.  They organize monthly tournaments which are held at the Academy course of Doha Golf Club and have over 150 members belonging to 11 different nationalities.  Membership is open to all residents of Qatar.

    Qatar Kite Surfing Club

    Depending on the direction of the winds, the members meet at various locations like Zekreet, Fuwairat or Wakrah.  The season is from October to June.  They offer advice on classes as well as equipment.  You have to be fit and over 14 years to participate.

    Qatar Little League

    The Qatar Little League is an all volunteer organization, open to English-speaking boys and girls (ages 4 to 18) interested in American baseball.  It has more than 250 children from over 22 nationalities.

    Qatar Motorbike Club

    Open to everybody, (bikes not required but interest and desire to ride is).  Currently with over 200 members.  They have a Road section and a Desert section that both ride out on a Friday morning and sometimes on Saturday morning as well.  They meet socially every Tuesday night at Garveys.  The club is actively involved at the Losail Circuit.

    Qatar Natural History Group
    Qatar Natural History Group (QNHG) was founded in November 1978 to ‘bring together people with an interest in the natural history of Qatar and the Gulf’.  They have an annual subscription of QR 30 per adult and meetings take place between October and June, usually on the first Wednesday of the month (at the Gym at DESS, 7:30pm).  They conduct field trips on the last Friday of each month to places of interest around Qatar, camping trips and star-gazing expeditions, and during eid they also plan visits overseas.

    Qatar Scientific Club

    The Doha Writers’ Workshop, a community organization of writers of all genres, including poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction, meets on a bimonthly basis to generate new material and critique submitted manuscripts.  The group also sponsors one day long writing seminars, workshops in the Waqif Art centre, and free public readings by locally based writers.
