Qatar became centre stage attraction when it hosted the 15th Asian Games in Doha.  It was an unprecedented sporting achievement for the city, the country, and the Gulf Region.

The Games were held on the 1st December to 15th December 2006.

45 Countries participated for the first time ever, establishing it as the largest Asian Games in history. More than 10,000 athletes in an estimated 39 events took part.  They were held over 21 venues in and around Doha.

Despite the opulence of the occasion, the country was not phased by the sheer magnitude of the celebrations, proving to the world that Qatar could stage a major event of this size and scale on its own.

Although the closing ceremony was superb, arguably the highlight of the Games was indeed the Opening Ceremony, and the lighting of the flame.

It had taken an estimated 55 days for the torch to travel a distance of 50,000 kilometres through 13 countries and 23 cities.

And In true Qatari style and tradition H.H Sheikh Mohammad Bin Hamad Al-Thani, gave an awe-inspiring horse back ride ascending a steep and slippery ramp with H.H Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani looking on.  The probabilities of rain could not have been predicted, however Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani heroically completed the breathtaking ride to the top, and on reaching lit the flame to an enormous roar of approval from the 50,000 spectators in Khalifa International Stadium.

World records were set or equalled, and 24 Asian records were broken.  Whilst China topped the medals table with a staggering 166 Gold Medals, Qatar also triumphed winning 9 Golds, one of which being the coveted Football competition. They also went on to claim 12 Silvers and 11 Bronze medals, earning them a maximum of 32 points and 10th postion in the medals table.

Doha 2006 Asian Games has been an exceptional achievement by Qatar, and they have endeavoured to leave a positive sporting legacy to be enjoyed and cherished by many generations to come.
