Qatar is a relatively small country and the easiest way to see it is by road. A 4WD is essential if you mean to go exploring. A lot of the beaches and intresting places in the north of Qatar can only be reached with one, though you have to have some experience to drive in the dunes in the South of Qatar. The preferred vehicle by locals is the Land Cruiser 4WD. That said you can find every other car in Doha from the Ferrari's and Lamborghini's to the 1985 Datsun.

Within the city you really do need a car to get about and renting one if you have an international liscence is fairly easy, though it does take a while to get used to the driving styles adopted by many of the drivers here. Taxi's are available but are not really reliable. The bus service has very recently begun. The ticket is very nominal QR 2 but the routes and bus numbers should be checked on before you set out.

There are also a number of Boats on hire and sale that are excellent for exploring the neighboring islands that form a part of Qatar.

Airlines

Qatar is home to one of the fastest growing airlines in the world. Qatar Airways connects Doha to 72 destinations worldwide. Doha International Airport accommodates over 20 passenger airlines and is currently undergoing an expansion programme to cater to the growing number of visitors to Qatar.

Cars & Buses

With progressive growth in Qatar's infrastructure and services new Mowasalat taxi and bus services have been incorporated. The taxis are just a call away and charge reasonably but bus services are not yet very efficient.

The best way to get around in Doha is by car. Qatar has good network of roads and highways though the roundabouts can be a bit daunting; things are slowly improving, and now you might see traffic lights at some roundabouts to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during peak hours. Petrol stations can be found throughout Doha and along the main roads.

The organisers of the Asian Games have announced that a special bus service will operate during the games to transport thousands of officials, athletes and guests. The transport company Mowasalat has promised that up to 600 buses will run daily.

Boats

Many residents here own boats but there are no regular passenger services linking coastal towns and cities. However one can take a boat ride to some of the off shore islands or cruise the bay aboard a traditional Dhow. The best way to arrange it is to contact a local tour operator.
