Telecommunications in Qatar are handled by Qatar Telecom, (QTEL), which is a public company since 1995. For now, QTEL has a complete monopoly on providing communication services in the country.

QTEL is a modern and very well organised company, although it is quite amusing seeing their regular announcements in the local papers boosting about profitability (of course they will be profitable when they have a monopoly).

Fixed landline telephones are easy and quick to obtain, and for local calls you only pay the quarterly subscription. International call charges are quite steep. Mobile telephony is widespread and of excellent quality. The system used, as in most of the world, is GSM. MMS, WEP and GSRM services are also available, and 3G services are being tested and are available. QTEL also has roaming contracts with many countries in the world, so if you're coming on a short trip to Qatar, or you have Qatari mobile and you travel to Europe or Asia, chances are that your telephone will work. QTEL offers regular subscription lines for GSM (post-paid) and also easy to obtain post-paid cards (HALA).

QTEL also provides cable TV network, with a large selection of international channels. Satellite antennas and receivers are allowed and available everywhere. QTEL's cable offerings are very economical and also family-oriented, with a carefully selected choice of channels.

The Post Office in Qatar began operating in 1950 with a staff of just 6. In May 1963 the State of Qatar took full responsibility for its own Postal Services.

From that date, what is now the General Postal Corporation (GPC) has improved its services to the public against a rapidly increasing population at a vast and almost unprecedented rate of development.

It has a new purpose-built sorting center and headquarters equipped with the latest technologically advanced equipment, designed to cater to the country''s growing requirements.

Internet connections offered by QTEL range from regular dial-up to ADSL and leased lines. Although more expensive than in Europe or the US, QTEL's ADSL offerings for individuals are excellent. They range from 500 Kbps for a flat fee of QR 200/month to fantastic 2Mbps for only 400 QR/month.

QTEL delivers and installs the ADSL modem for you, and modems used are Alcatel (now Thomson) Speed Touch. They work on both PC and MAC, although if you''re MAC user you''ll have to figure out the installation yourself (Qtel technicians are often not very familiar with MAC operating systems).
