Facilities

Qatar has a number of world class venues for a variety of sports besides the many courts and fields in schools and in private compounds and the numerous sports facilities available at all the major hotels. Among the most notable sporting venues are the Khalifa Stadium, The aspire Academy, The Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex, the Doha Golf Club and the Losail Motor Circuit.

Khalifa Olympic City

Built in 1976 to the highest specifications, and  renovated for the Asian Games, Khalifa Sports City has various buildings planned around it with the stadium forming the focal point.  The Stadium presently seats fifty thousand spectators and has an Olympic-size athletic track, and an Indoor sports hall with a seating capacity of 1800 spectators.  

The Aspire Academy, Super Club, Aquatic Centre, Friday Mosque, Women’s Sports Hall, Women’s Club and the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Hospital are all housed within Khalifa Sports City.

Aspire Sports Academy

Aspire is Qatar’s visionary Sports Academy, which launched its academic curriculum in September 2004.  The characteristic dome part of the largest purpose built multi sports arena in the world was designed by award winning French architect Roger Tallibert, and the construction took a about 24 months to complete.

Aspire Academy discovers the finest sporting talent from the region and around the world, turning them into world class professional sportsmen.  With state-of-the-art facilities and world-class training on offer, this centre of excellence has become unique at its level in providing the best infrastructure with sports science facilities.  This training environment now boasts some of the most advanced technology and facilities to be found anywhere in the world.

Together with this high sports program, Aspire has launched a number of community based initiatives to improve and promote the value of sports and healthier lifestyles.  Many fitness classes are now available at Aspire, including several for children as young as 1 year old to teenagers and adults.  Some of their facilities include:

Hamad Aquatic Centre
This complex is designed to the Olympic and international standard technologies and specifications.  It has the required, most advanced equipment and installations that qualify it to host all local and world-class tournaments.  It also has modern facilities for water sports such as water polo, diving, swimming, synchronized swimming and aquatic recreational activities.

National Team Club

Houses 7 football pitches over 2 floors.  It is an interactive space for coaching, recreational facilities, and training.

The Mosque

The Mosque is located close to Khalifa Stadium.  It’s architecture compliments the sports stadium with the finish coordinating with adjacent buildings.

Qatar Orthopedic and Sport Medical Centre
Aspetar, the hospital located within the Aspire Zone (Sports City), has been developed to internationally accredited standards and is designed to treat orthopedic problems and athletic injuries using the latest technology to guide patients through subsequent rehabilitation for complete recovery.

Aspire Women’s Sports Hall

Provides indoor facilities for court sports such as basketball and volleyball.  It can also be used for entertainment events and functions.

Ladies Club
Provides recreational facilities for women, including squash courts, tennis courts, fitness area and library.

 

Khalifa International Complex for Tennis and Squash

Khalifa International Complex for Tennis and Squash
Established in 1992 to the international standards, this complex hosts international tennis and squash events on annual basis. Foremost of these is the international Qatar Open championship.

Doha Golf Club

Founded by the Qatar National Hotels Company in 1997, this club hosts all the activities of the Qatar Golf Federation.  It has an international standard course on which the prestigious Qatar Masters tournament is held annually since 1998.

Ladies Tennis Hall

With two new courts and terraces, this facility is one of the most modern sports installations in Qatar where ladies can practice tennis.

Al Shaqab Stud Farm

Situated in Al Rayyan and under the wing of Qatar Foundation Al Shaqab Stud Farm was one of the first stud farms in the gulf.  Covering 400 acres of land this prestigious farm houses the Emir’s prized collection of Arabian thoroughbreds.  The farm offers a number of classes from dressage, to jumping lessons and desert hacks as well as lectures and demonstrations. Visits to the farm must be booked in advance or arranged through a tour operator.

Al Sadd Sports Stadium

Founded in 1969, Al Sadd Football Club is undeniably the country’s most successful team.  Also known as “Al Zaeem” which translates as “The Boss” Al Sadd have a large following, and have won many major competitions including the Emir Cup and the Heir Apparent Trophy.  Matches are played at their Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium which holds 18,000 including VIP seats.
