| Doha Players present Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, an absurdist tragicomedy by Tom Stoppard, On Thursday May 20 and Friday May 21, 8 pm, at College of the North Atlantic - Qatar
Who are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern? Two minor characters of Shakespeare’s Hamlet but two of the most infamous of Shakespeare’s pawns. Being childhood friends of Hamlet, they are summoned to the court by Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius to spy upon Hamlet. Later, Claudius orders them to escort Hamlet to England with a letter asking the English king to kill Hamlet. Hamlet escapes, replacing the letter with one which asks the king to kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
The two minor characters come centre stage as a Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy in Stoppard’s absurdist comedy. As the events of Hamlet unfold about them, they are lost in hilarious confusion. Feeling their lives move more and more out of their own control, they question the very reality they are trapped within. Every act to escape propels them closer to their unfortunate destiny.
